Attack on BHU student leads to stone pelting on campus

VARANASI: Two groups of inmates of Birla and Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) hostels indulged in heavy stone pelting after a BA II student was allegedly attacked by a dozen students over some ‘past controvers­y’ on BHU premises on Saturday, police said.

The incident took place when the student identified as Ashutosh Maurya was on his way to LBS hostel after writing his semester examinatio­n, the police said. Station house officer, Lanka police station, Sanjiv Mishra said a case under relevant sections of IPC was registered against five persons following a complaint by the student who was attacked.

Mishra said strict action would be taken against those involved in the incident.

Maurya alleged that around a dozen students armed with knife, country made pistol and canes attacked him in which he suffered injury in stomach and scratches on his back and hand.

As other students in the LBS came to know about the attack, they reached the spot and rushed the student to the hospital. Following it, Maurya along with his friends reached Lanka police station and filed an applicatio­n for registerin­g a complaint against five students for attacking him.

In the complaint to the police, he also alleged that Rs 14,570 were snatched from him by the attackers at gunpoint. Moreover, the supporters of the injured student and Birla hostel inmates reportedly indulged in heavy stone pelting for about half-an-hour.

Chief proctor Royana Singh and station house officer Sanjiv Mishra along with a heavy police force reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Singh along with security personnel carried out inspection at the hostels and ensured removal of the bricks stored on roof of the two hostels.

Mishra claimed situation was completely under control.
