Man disowns newborn girl after wife’s death
MEERUT: A newborn child was reportedly abandoned by her father after her mother’s death during childbirth on May 1, said sources from ApsNova hospital of Rakshapuram locality Meerut. On ventilator support, the baby is said to be in a critical condition.
The hospital staff said Sheeshpal of Pheena village in Bijnore convinced the hospital authorities that he would come back for his daughter after performing his wife’s last rites, but did not turn up even after two days.
The hospital administration tried contacting the baby’s family, however, one of the numbers mentioned in the records was switched off, while the other turned out to be a wrong number. Finally, they informed the Ganga Nagar police.
SP (rural) Rajesh Kumar said, “We have received a complaint and are trying to approach the infant’s family.” He said in case no one turned up to take her, she would be sent to an orphanage.
Dr Kashika Singh Chauhan said Sheeshpal admitted his pregnant wife Mamta, 32, to the hospital in a critical condition on April 30. She was bleeding profusely, said the doctor. “Blood was arranged and she was operated upon and shifted to the ICU as her pulse and blood pressure were not normal. We called a physician and some problem in her heart was identified. The physician started the treatment, but the patient experienced a cardiac arrest the next day,” said the doctor. She said the family collected her body and assured the management that they would come back for the baby after performing last rites.
“But no one showed up. After waiting for two days, we informed the police,” she said.
Meanwhile, the baby girl is still in the hospital’s nursery. “Her condition is critical. She is on ventilator,” said Dr Chauhan.
The deceased Mamta was mother to a four-year-old son and had two abortions before the girl’s birth.
