LUCKNOW: Unlike last year, when Rohan Gupta of Lucknow secured All India Rank 43 in JEE Main 2017, with a score of 328/360, this year Lucknow students could not make it among the top 50 in JEE Main 2018. So far, only Shubhang Pandey has turned out to be a topper with AIR -436, scoring 286 out of 360.

A comparative study of the All India Rank of Lucknow topper indicated that there had been an alarming drop in the performance of students from the state capital as compared to last year, said Dheeraj Mehrotra, national teacher awardee.

He said Lucknow should look for the reason and make efforts to restore the quality benchmark.

Mehrotra said, “We the educationists need to look into the

cause, as it is a dent in the prestige of the city which has produced many toppers in various competitions, including the IAS and NEET in yesteryears.”

Former CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly said the reason could be two-fold. “Firstly, there may be a serious fall in quality of schooling in Lucknow or the schools may not be in a position to nurture the ‘aptitude’ of the students any longer. Secondly, the meritorious students probably find other options attractive and so they lack a serious ‘ attitude’ towards engineering courses.”

The franchisee of a coaching institute in the city said, “The focus of the schools in north India is on board examination because of inter-school rivalry. The padagogy is board exam-oriented. Multiple choice questions (MCQ) and higher order thinking skills (HOTS) are being ignored. Analytical skills of the students are never tested.”

Mehrotra suggested extra labour related to project work, particularly in practical subjects, should be reduced. He said teachers must not ignore the competitive questions and schools must adopt monitoring of standards to prepare children towards competitive as well as board classes.
