Organic products a hit in Lucknow farmers’ market

-

LUCKNOW: For organic food lovers, the Habibullah Estate in Hazratganj turned into a market on Sunday. Nearly 36 local farmers exhibited their organic produce like dal, flour, mustard oil, fresh vegetables, fish, laddoos, jaggery, pickles, handmade jams and raw honey from 4 to 9 pm. The products were a hit with the buyers.

Elated with the success of the market, Shalini Singh, one of the organisers and owner of Alok Farms on Sitapur Road said, “About 36 stalls with seasonal flowers, medicated jaggery , handmade carpets, door mats , rugs, hand pounded turmeric, tomatoes and seeds, milk, ghee, mattha, jute bags, hand made bamboo flower vases, miniature gardens, terrariums, handmade chemical-free beauty products sold like hot cakes. This proves there is a great demand for organic products in the market but we don’t have the stalls to sell them. By providing the farmers space to sell their produce in Lucknow farmers market, Habibullah Estate has done a great job.”

A workshop on organic farming, e-commerce, handcrafted jewellery making and organic herbal skin care and ‘ubtan’ (scrub) was also organised.

Both the farmers of nearby areas and the buyers appreciated the concept of Lucknow farmers’ market. A farmer who put up a stall said with such efforts, small farmers would be encouraged to grow food naturally without the use of chemicals and deliver directly to customers.

This is the second such Lucknow farmers’ market organized at Habibullah Estate. Going by the huge response, the next such market would require a bigger venue in the days to come.
