ALLAHABAD: Tension prevailed in Sadhopur village of Baharia in trans-Ganga area of Allahabad after a statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar was found broken on Sunday morning.

Members of the dalit community assembled at the spot in large numbers and staged a protest. Senior police and administrative officials also reached and got the statue repaired.

Heavy force has been deployed in the village to avoid any untoward incident, police officials said.

The incident occurred only 35 days after an Ambedkar’s statue was vandalized in Jhunsi area.

A new statue was installed after BSP and SP workers led by MP Nagendra Singh Patel staged protest against the incident. An FIR was also lodged but the miscreants who damaged the statue could not be traced

As per reports, villagers found the statue broken early on Sunday morning.

The other part of the statue was found on the ground. It appeared that someone hit the statue with a heavy object. SP trans-Ganga Sunil Kumar Singh and other senior administrative officials reached the scene with heavy force.

The broken statue was immediately attached but the villagers demanded installation of a new statue.

Officials pacified the villagers and assured them installation of a new one within 48 hours.

Singh said unidentified persons damaged the statue with the intention of disturbing peace in the area.

An FIR will be lodged and investigations will be carried out to nab the culprits, he added.

Earlier, an Ambedkar statue was found broken inside a park in Jhunsi area on March 31, 2018.
