LUCKNOW: The Congress is likely to support the joint opposition candidates in the by-elections to Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur assembly seats.

UPCC president Raj Babbar said though the Congress had a strong support base in the region, his party was against division of opposition votes. A decision on the issue would be taken in a day or two, he said.

Another Congress leader said the party might extend support to the two candidates instead of fielding its own candidate.

The Rashtriya Lok Dal has decided to field Samajwadi Party leader Tabassum Hasan as its candidate for Kairana Lok Sabha seat. The SP has extended its support to the RLD candidate.

NAIM-UL-HASAN IS SP CANDIDATE FOR NOORPUR SEAT

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday named Naim-ul-Hasan as the party’s candidate for the Noorpur (Bijnore) assembly bypoll. He also said that the party has decided to support Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Tabassum Hasan for the Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll.

Both the bypolls will take place on May 28. Tabassum Hasan was the Bahujan Samaj Party MP from Kairana from 2009 to 2014 before migrating to the Samajwadi Party.

Under the pact with the RLD, Tabassum took primary membership of that party on Sunday. Both Tabassum and Naim will file their nominations soon.
