LUCKNOW: An asymmetrical jawline could be corrected, said experts on Friday at the orthognathic two-day conference on problems in jaw shape and corrective surgery, organised by the department of plastic surgery, King George’s Medical University (KGMU).

“People have myths regarding deformed jaws. They think they have to live with the deformities such as improper extension of lower / upper jaw. But the fact is these can be corrected surgically,” said Prof AK Singh, head of the department of plastic surgery.

During the conference, some patients were also operated upon by experts from different parts of the country. Through the demonstration, the experts shared advanced methods available in the field.

An 18-year-old youth with bi-jaw deformity was operated upon by Dr Anil Murarka. The surgery was shown live from the operating theatre to the participants, as Dr Murarka explained the technique.

Patients were also operated upon for treating conditions like sleep apnea, hypoplastic maxilla and other jaw-related issues.

“What happens in treatment of jaw problems is that the patient moves from one doctor to another -- who have different opinions. This difference of opinion creates confusion and so the patient often prefers to live with the issue,” said Prof Singh. He said plastic surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons play a key role in treating such problems. “If different doctors treat the problem, the cost of treatment also goes up,” he said.

Later, experts also shared their views on the topic ‘surgery first versus orthodontics first’.
