IIT-K experts to give tech boost to policing in UP

LUCKNOW: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) will assist the state police in increasing its capability with the support of modern technology, a senior officer said.

A meeting of senior police officers and a delegation of IIT-K, led by its director Abhay Karandikar, was held under the chairmansh­ip of director general of police (DGP) OP Singh to discuss various aspects of policing that will be assisted by technical experts.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, DIG (law and order) Praveen Kumar said the state police would sign a memorandum of understand­ing (MoU) with IIT-K.

“IIT-Kanpur will assist the state police in increasing its capability through data and video analytics.

Experts from IIT-K will increase cyber capacity and impart training to the police to check cyber crime,” he said. Kumar said IIT would also help the police department in setting up a high-quality social media laboratory and improving the communicat­ion system. “IIT will also provide high-quality drones at cheaper rate. Experts will also assist in crowd management during Kumbh- 2019 after studying crowd management analytics. Technical experts will also develop a low-cost breath analyser,” he said.

WB TO ASSIST UP POLICE IN TRAFFIC MGMT

The World Bank will assist the state police in traffic management and road safety on national and state highways.

World Bank will also give USD 40 million assistance to UP police to set up units of UP highway police on national highway-2 from Mathura to Varanasi and national highway-25 from Lucknow to Kanpur.

A meeting of the World Bank team, led by senior transport specialist Elina Chesova, met DGP OP Singh to discuss unrestrict­ed and safe movement of traffic on highways.
