Use machines, not humans, for nullah cleaning: Mayor
LUCKNOW: Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia has expressed anguish over the use of child labour for nullah cleaning in Hazratganj on Saturday.
“Use of child workforce is not acceptable. The work of nullah cleaning is full of risk and hazardous for health. We cannot allow kids to fall prey to the practice of child labour and such practice will not be tolerated in future,” she said.
“I have ordered strict action in this regard and directed officials to use latest equipment for the cleaning of drains instead of using humans to clean the filth. Officials have been asked to evolve a system so that no one touches the filth during the process – from the cleaning to the transportation of filth to the landfill site,” said Sanyukta Bhatia.

Lucknow Municipal Corporation in Hazratganj, said Manoj Kumar, acting municipal commissioner.
He called for a detailed report from area sanitation inspector Dilip Dey in this regard.
“The Lucknow Municipal Corporation carries out desilting work every year, but use of child labour this time has shocked us. We cannot allow this practice whatever may be the reasons,” said Manoj Kumar.
The mayor also directed officials to click pictures of the nullahs before and after the cleaning work to check any irregularity in the work.
She said robotic suction jetting machines be used to clean the nullahs, drains and manholes.
These machines are widely used in developed countries for cleaning of drains and manholes.

Robotic suction jetting machines are used to clean drains and manholes that can’t be accessed by labourers.
This robot can easily get inside and clean such areas.
The robot will give the command and the pipe will suck the silt of storm water drains.
