Vamsi wins CCBW chess title

LUCKNOW:A Vamsi Krishna won the 2018 CCBW-Golden Apple U-13 Junior Chess Championsh­ip with 6.5/7 dropping only half point to second seed Aditya Pant in round 5.

As top seed Krishna, Fide rating 1391, scored six wins with a display of excellent opening preparatio­n and middle-game technique.

Aditya Pant also maintained his second seeding (1234) and finished runners-up. He dropped an extra half point to unrated Tejasva Singh.

Eight-year-old unrated Saanvi Agarwal, who created an upset in the first round by beating third seed rated Himmika Amarnani and picked up a half point against rated Kaumudi Jain in the third round, remained the star performer of the event.

Saanvi showed excellent endgame technique to conclude with four points. Saanvi was set to win the last round, but fell unwell in a won position. She still managed the second place in the u-9 category. Atharva Rastogi won the u-9 first on tie-break with four points. Prisha Garg was third.

Tejasva Singh, drawing with the runners-up and a win over a rated player, took the u-10 first with five points. Aryaman Jain was second and Pranshu Maurya third with four and three points respective­ly.

Siddhant Singh was first in the u11 section on tiebreak with Himmika Amarnani being second. Both scored 4.5 points. Shivaansh Tandon was third with four points.

The u-13 section also saw a tiebreak result with Rohan Pandey first and Anshuman Nanda second with five points each. Nikhar Saxena was third with 4.5 points. All players were provided free lunch and snacks in the playing hall.

DEVENDRA WINS

Devendra Bajpai emerged victorious in the Seniors vs Upcoming Players Chess Tournament with five points.

Kuldeep and Pawan had to satisfy with second and third positions, respective­ly. In the Upcoming players Aditya Pant and Vamsi Krishna scored 1.5 point each but due to tie break Aditya stood first.

DSC XI IN FINAL

DSC XI scored a convincing sixwicket win against Target XI to make it to the final of the Samual Banerjee Memorial Veterans Cricket Tournament, at the Jaipuria School ground here in Alambagh. Needing 84 to win in 20 overs, DSC XI romped home in 15.5 overs. Sanjay Yadav struck unbeaten 28.

GOPAL SHINES

An all-round performanc­e by Gopal Singh (38 runs, 4 wkts) helped Chandan XI beat Kranti T20 in a league match of the Karan Tripathi Memorial T20 Cricket Tournament, at the Multi Acivity Ground here on Sunday.

EASY VICTORY

Dhruv Cricket Academy scored a convincing 63-run win against K Sports Red to collect full points in CAL’s under-14 cricket league here on Sunday. DCA Red piled up 205/9 in 40 overs while batting first after winning the toss. In reply, K Sports Red got out for 142 in 29.5 overs.
