GORAKHPUR : A 20-year-old man was hung from a tree upside down and beaten to death, allegedly by the family members of a 21-year-old woman with whom he was said to be found in a compromising position, in Lala Tola village in Gorakhpur on Sunday night, police said.

Agitated over the incident, the victim’s family tried to set the house of the accused persons afire but were prevented by the police.

Tension prevailed in the area and force from four police stations and one company of the provincial armed constabulary (PAC) was deployed to avert any untoward incident.

Station house officer, Pipraich, Arun Shukla said three people, including the woman’s parents and brother, were arrested on the basis of the FIR lodged by Heera Lal Nishad, father of the victim Ramesh Nishad.

He said after receiving information about the incident, the police reached the spot and took Ramesh to BRD Medical College where he was pronounced dead by doctors.

Shukla said the woman’s parents alleged that Ramesh had entered their house with an intention to harass their daughter. Villagers claimed that the couple were in a relationship but their families opposed it.

A local resident, who did not wish to be named, said the couple had eloped last month after which the woman’s family lodged a police complaint against Ramesh. Later, both the parties reached a compromise, he added.
