Family members allegedly kill girl for honour

LUCKNOW: An 18-year-old girl was allegedly immolated by her family members in Rampur district on the suspicion of having an affair.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. Police are probing the incident.

“The incident occurred in Senta khera village in Tanda area. The girl was reportedly immolated by her elder brother and father after they suspected her of having an affair said,” said a local police official.

The family later cremated the remains on Sunday night to avoid any suspicion. However, some residents of the village informed police about it.

According to locals, the girl’s father is a farmer while her elder brother works in a private firm in Swar. The girl was an undergradu­ate student.

“Few residents of the village told us about the incident on Sunday. But we have not received any written complaint regarding the matter yet,” said station house officer of Tanda police station Jeet Singh.

The family members reportedly told their neighbours that the girl died in an accidental fire.

A police team visited the family on Monday and inquired about the incident.

“We are conducting a preliminar­y investigat­ion in the matter. If anything suspicious is found, police will lodge an FIR and conduct proper investigat­ion,” said deputy superinten­dent of police (DSP) Swar, Rahul Kumar.

“We have also asked the residents and relatives to lodge police complaint regarding the matter if they suspect any foul play,” the DSP added.
