MEERUT: Nandini Garg of Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli scored a perfect 100 in four subjects and 99 in Hindi to share the top position with three other students in CBSE’s Class 10 board examinations on Tuesday.
Nandini is one of the three girls - Rimzhim Agarwal of RP Public School in Bijnor of Uttar Pradesh and Sreelakshmi G of Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya in Kerala’s Kochi - along with Prakhar Mittal from DPS in Gurgaon’s Sector 45 who shared the top rank.
“The credit for my success goes to my teachers, parents and self-study,” the student of Scottish International School said.
Nandini’s father Rajeev Garg and uncle Ritesh Garg are the directors of the school. “Nandini kept herself away from social media and never used any electronic gadget, including mobile phones,” Ritesh said.
He said Nandini’s teachers were helpful and guided her at every step. Nandini said she is fond of Indian music and dance and wants to become an IAS officer.
Seven students secured the second position with 498 marks and 14 students bagged the third spot with a score of 497. Officials said 131,493 students crossed the 90% mark and 27,476 scored more than 95% out of more than 16 lakh who appeared for the exam.
The overall pass percentage, however, fell to 86.70 from 90.95 last year, registering a dip of 4.25 percentage points. In 2016, 96.21% students cleared the exam.
Girls did better than boys with an overall passing percentage of 88.67 compared to 85.32 for boys, repeating a pattern seen for the last few years.

LUCKNOW: Shrishti Mathur, 16, of Lucknow emerged as the topper in Lucknow (98.8% marks) and shared second rank with three others in the CBSE Class 10 exam in Allahabad region.
She shared the second spot with three students – Shubhangi and Nandita Biswas of Kanpur and Zeba Parveen of Fatehpur (all got 494 marks).
An avid reader, Shrishti wants to pursue science stream. She scored 99 in English communication and Hindi, 98 in mathematics and science and 100 in social science.
“My parents are my biggest inspiration who constantly motivated me,” she said. Her father, Sandeep Mathur is executive director in Indian Railways and mother Charu Mathur a homemaker. Shrishti aspires to be an engineer and aims to pursue MBA in near future. The Allahabad region of CBSE covers 60 districts of UP. As many 86.25% of the candidates in the region cleared the exam, said Shweta Arora, CBSE’s regional secretary for Allahabad.
ASTHA TRIPATHI (98.4%)
Astha Tripathi, a student of Rani Laxmi Bai Memorial Senior Secondary School, Lucknow scored 98.4% with an aggregate of 489 out of 500. She has scored 100 in science, 97 in English communication and mathematics, 99 in Hindi and social science.
“I aspire to be an engineer and therefore have opted for Physics Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12, said Astha whose father U Tripathi, is an auditor at LIC and mother Garima Tripathi is a homemaker. Astha said she studied only for 3-4 hours a day.
NANDINI SHARMA (98%)
Nandini Sharma, 16, is not just a topper from Delhi Public School Indira Nagar, Lucknow with an aggregate of 490 out of 500, but is also a blogger. This girl has a flair for writing and runs a blog ‘aapkimuskan.blogspot.com where she writes her poetry.
She scored 100 in science, 99 in mathematics and social science, 97 in English communication and 95 in Hindi. “I have decided to take PCB and plan to crack NEET after my Class 12 board exams,” said Nandini whose father Sandeep Kumar Sharma is manager of Western Indian Oman Airlines. She aspires to be a doctor.
VANI SINHA (97.8%)
Vani Sinha, 15, is Class 10 topper of The Millennium School, Lucknow with an aggregate of 489 out of 500. She scored 96 in English communication and Hindi, 99 in mathematics, science and social science. She said: “Proper time management with equal focus on each subject has been my success mantra.” Her father, Nitish Sinha, is ADG in UIDAI and mother Priti Sinha is DGM in NTPC. Vani aspires to be a cardiac surgeon.
YASH PANT (97.8%)
Yash Pant, 17, is the topper at Study Hall. He scored 98 in Hindi, 100 in computer Science, 100 in science, 99 in maths and 98 in social studies.
He said he was regular in class and revised everything taught in class every day. He wants to be an engineer. “I used to play video games when I was stressed,” he said.
