LUCKNOW: A 26-year-old Kushinagar man has been transformed into a woman -- thanks to the plastic surgeons at the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) who performed a sex reassignment surgery on him. The patient is now thinking of a new name to suit her new gender.

“The man approached us over a year ago and insisted that he be transformed into a woman,” said Prof AK Singh, head plastic surgery department, who conducted the procedure on May 8. Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, he said. “The patient will be discharged in a day or two, and will lead life as a normal woman, barring the fact that pregnancy is not possible.”

He said that although required organs had been created on the body, internal organs such as the uterus that a woman was born with and various hormones that help her conceive were not present in the patient.

Prof Singh said that when the man first approached them, doctors thought it was a misunderstanding. However, when he kept on insisting on becoming a woman, they got him evaluated in the department of psychiatry.

“His condition was found normal, but his desire to become a woman was very high. He kept insisting that his soul was that of a woman, but his body was incorrectly that of a man. We then took legal clearance and prepared for the surgery,” he said.

The doctor said that breast enhancement was done on the patient and the post-surgery hormonal therapy would continue to bring the female hormones to the level in which they were present in a woman’s body.

Remarking on the patient’s desire to become a woman, Prof Singh said that often people felt they were in the “wrong body”. “But we should live in what (the body) we have, as what nature has given is the best for us,” he said.
