MEERUT: Two men involved in the murder of a newly-wed woman and loot last month on the Delhi-Dehradun highway were on Tuesday killed in a gun battle with the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, officials said.

A joint team of the state’s special task force and police surrounded the two men at a secluded place in Kanker Khera area on Tuesday morning after receiving a tip-off about their movement, officials said.

They fired on the team in order to escape but sustained bullet injuries in retaliatory firing by police and died on the spot, officials added. Both men were in their 20s and had a cash reward of Rs 25 thousand on each.

The task force’s superintendent of police Alok Priyadarshi said the men have been identified as Narsi alias Tiger of Modinagar and Dheeraj of Shatabdi

Police have recovered a carbine, pistol, country-made pistol, live cartridges and two magazines from the possession of the men, he added.

They were a part of a gang that robbed the newly-wed couple of their valuables and car on April 27 near Daurala on National Highway 58 and shot the bride dead when she resisted them. The couple was on their way back home in Muzaffarnagar after attending a wedding in Ghaziabad.

The police arrested three other members of the gang earlier in May. They were also involved in a similar incident of loot on the highway in February this year.
