LUCKNOW : On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on Thursday, Department of Public Health Dentistry of King George’s Medical University Lucknow, organised various awareness programmes under the guidance of Dr Vinay Kumar Gupta, department head, at various places in Lucknow, based on the 2018 theme of World Health Organisati­on ‘Tobacco Breaks Hearts’. On the occasion, Dr Gaurav Mishra from department of Public Health Dentistry, KGMU presented a guest lecture on ‘Effects of tobacco on heart diseases and cancer prevention’ at office complex, UP Housing and Developmen­t board, Telibagh, Lucknow and also organised an oral cancer screening camp for awareness and prevention from cancer, in which more than 200 people were benefitted and signed a pledge to quit tobacco. Dr Sumit Kumar from department of the same department with his team made more than 300 people aware about ‘Myths and beliefs about tobacco and causes of cancer’ through a street play at primary health centre and tehsil commpound of Sarojini Nagar. In this play, interns Tanushri, Babita, Arya, Sugandha, Diksha, Rupali, and Ridhi participat­ed actively. Also at village Banthara (Kanpur road) Lucknow, Dr Gaurav Mishra and Dr Nishita Kankane organised an oral cancer screening camp and street play in which more than

250 villagers were educated about harmful effects of tobacco and how it causes periodonti­tis, gingival recession, tooth loss and precancero­us lesions and conditions in the oral cavity. Dr Nishita Kankane also presented a theme based model through the department for the people coming to the dental OPD of KGMU, which was very beneficial and praised by all.
