Speeding SUV hits cops on patrol, one killed

LUCKNOW : A 31-year-old police constable Ravindra Kumar was killed while another constable Ramakant Yadav, 50, was critically injured after their motorcycle was hit by a speeding SUV when they were on patrol in PGI police area here on the intervenin­g night of Thursday and Friday.

District police spokesman, Arun Kumar said the two constables were posted at Kalli Paschim police outpost of PGI area and were patrolling on a motorcycle in the area at around 1am. He said the speeding SUV coming from Allahabad side hit the motorcycle from behind when the constables were moving on Lucknow-Raebareli road.

Kumar said Ramakant, who was driving the motorcycle, was thrown away on the road side while Ravindra came under the wheels of the SUV. He said Ravindra was dragged for few metres before the SUV rammed into the electric pole and boundary wall of a house on the roadside. He said Ravindra succumbed on the spot while Ramakant is undergoing treatment at the trauma centre of KGMU.

He said the SUV driver Sandeep Mishra was drunk and was over speeding at the time of incident. He said Mishra, who also sustained injuries, has been arrested an FIR of causing death and injury due to negligent driving was registered against him at the PGI police station. He said Sandeep Mishra is a clerk in education department and posted in Allahabad.

Meanwhile, SSP Lucknow, Deepak Kumar paid tributes to the deceased constable during his visit to the post-mortem house of KGMU. He consoled the aggrieved family members and assured them all possible support from the police department and job for the dependent. He even visited the trauma centre to know about the condition of the injured constable .

Besides, UPDGP OP Singh on Friday, sent a proposal to the state government recommendi­ng extraordin­ary pension or full salary for cops grievously injured on duty and in coma for long period.
