Govt plans summit to promote one district, one product scheme

-

LUCKNOW: The state government is all set to host another investors’ summit, this time solely for promotion of the ‘one district one product’ (ODOP) scheme, an official said.

The government has identified 75 products of as many districts that are indigenous. These products have made the respective districts famous.

Through this summit, the state government will promote these 75 products at the national and international level and aim to generate job opportunities in the rural areas. The state government had organised a two-day investors’ summit on February 21 that was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The proposed summit also aims to give a flip to the micro small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector with its ODOP scheme. The MSME sector is the backbone of the state’s industrial landscape. It contributes 60% to the state’s industrial output and employs nearly 40 lakh people.

The long list of 75 products includes the world famous carpets of Bhadohi, brassware of Moradabad, locks of Aligarh, black pottery of Mirzapur, crockery of Khurja, leather of Agra and Kanpur and chikan of Lucknow.

According to officials of the industry ministry, the date for the summit is yet to be finalised.

“It will be a one-day summit, likely to be held in June or July,” said an official of the industrial development ministry.

Three issues will be discussed in detail at the summit. They include agro and food processing, handloom and silk and craft and tourism.

From providing financial support to those actively engaged with these products, artisans or traders to technical up gradation and marketing support, the state government will extend all possible help to promote products selected under the ODOP scheme. The state government intends to provide technical know-how and loan to traders under the union government’s skill development programme. The Yogi government has also proposed a seminar of industrialists in Jhansi on June 9 to give push to industrialisation in the region.
