VARANASI: A concrete shuttering plate of an under-construction flyover on Gilat Bazar-Babatpur four-lane road reportedly collapsed near Tarna at around 4 am on Friday while the work was in progress, officials said.

No one was injured in the incident as all traffic had been diverted to other routes.

Shuttering plates are iron structures used as support to give shape to concrete.

Concrete material is filled in the structure or shape made through shuttering plates to create a beam, wall or pillar.

Residents of nearby areas claimed that concrete shuttering plate fell with a loud thud creating panic among them.

Project manager National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) Pankaj Singh said: “Construction work was underway when a concrete shuttering plate of 12 metre opened, perhaps because of loose nut.”

Singh said officials present at the construction site immediately took the plate down. The road on which construction of flyover is underway was already closed and traffic was diverted to other routes. As a result, no untoward incident occurred at the site.

District magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra has ordered a magisterial probe into the matter. He has asked additional district magistrate (city) Virendra Pandey to submit report as soon as possible.
