LUCKNOW: The Beghamat Royal Family of Avadh organised a grand iftar at Haji Islam Hussain Park here on Saturday.

Mahiraj Dhwaj, senior Rashtra Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) Pracharak, Zarina Usmani, former UP Women’s Commission chairperson and others took part in the iftar. More than 120 rozedaars from all walks of life also came together to offer namaaz and break the day-long fast during the ongoing month of Ramzan.

Mahiraj Dwaj said in times of growing communal discord, such iftars played an important role in binding people together.

In his short speech, he also highlighted the contribution of Muslims in the freedom movement and said instead of ‘pelting each other with stones’, people should come together to maintain communal harmony.

Many non-Muslims participated in the Iftar party, sending a clear message of communal harmony and brotherhood among the masses. “It’s the holy month of Ramzan and nothing could be better that organising an iftar during this month,” said Farhana Maliki, national president

No other city has witnessed such a great bonding between Hindus and Muslims as it is in Lucknow.

She said the aim behind organising the iftar was to bring people, irrespective of their caste and creed, together and to send a message of communal harmony.

In the iftar, several slum dwellers were also invited from the Old City and other parts of Lucknow.

There were about 60 women, for whom special arrangements were made.

Maliki said such gatherings were not new for Lucknow, the city of Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb (composite culture).

“No other city has witnessed such a great bonding between Hindus and Muslims as it is in Lucknow. It’s the same city where people from both the community joined hands to fight the British army during the First War of Independence,” she said.
