Democrats hope for primary wins

-

WASHINGTON : Indian Americans Ami Bera and Ro Khanna topped their California primaries as Democrats overcome fears of being shut out of November election from the state.

Seven other states also elected nominees on Tuesday for the midterm elections. US President Donald Trump also found reason to celebrate, tweeting Republicans had a “great night”. John Cox, a Republican businessman backed by the president, won a spot in the governor’s race from California, whose unique system advances top two candidates from the primaries to the main. They can be of either party or the same party.

Democrat Gavin Newsom, the serving Lt-Governor, won the top slot, that all but guaranteed his final victory in November. California is a heavily Democratic state where Trump lost to Hillary Clinton by four million votes in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump tweeted on Wednesday: “Even Fake News CNN said the Trump impact was really big, much bigger than they ever thought possible. So much for the big Blue Wave, it may be a big Red Wave. Working hard!”

Democrats had hoped to trigger a Blue Wave with these primaries, starting with California, that, it was expected, would give them control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, from Republicans. But that seemed in doubt as elections drew closer. There were concerns Democrats could be shut out of some districts because of the multitude of Democrats in the field, which might splinter the field.
