VARANASI : Jal nigam junior engineer (JE) Sushil Kumar Gupta, who along with two contractors was injured in an attack by a dozen unidentified assailants in Ravindrapuri area under Lanka police station on Wednesday, was airlifted to AIIMS after his condition turned critical, police said.

The police created green corridor between trauma centre, BHU and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi. Traffic was stopped at all intersections and trisection on the route to ensure smooth passage of the ambulance carrying the JE.

Superintendent of police (traffic) Suresh Chandra Rawat said that green corridor was created to ensure smooth passing of ambulance to shift the patient to the airport within specified time. From the airport, he was taken to AIIMS in an air ambulance.

Gupta were attacked by a group of a dozen unidentified assailants as the junior engineer and contractors Bhupendra Singh and Kamlesh Kumar Singh refused to stop work of repairing gapping in water supply line in Ravindrapuri area where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public relations office is also located.

The police said two persons came on a bike and asked them to stop the work but the contractors and the JE shooed them away.

After a while, a group of over a dozen youths armed with canes and sticks reached the spot and thrashed them. A doctor at the trauma centre, who did not wish to be identified, said the condition of the JE was very critical.
