LUCKNOW/KANPUR: With the results of JEE Advanced 2018 scheduled to be announced by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur on Sunday, some students are confident of doing well while others are keeping their fingers crossed.

Most students found the exam tougher than the previous years, especially the mathematics section. Experts say there could be a drop in the overall cutoff as many were not happy with their performance.

Students at GD Goenka Public School are confident of cracking the exam but not sure about their rank and colleges where they will get admission.

Yashi Agarwal, who scored 92.4% in CBSE Class 12 board examination this year, wants to pursue B Tech in computer science.

“I always knew what I wanted to do and had my feet firmly grounded. I have always dreamt of being an IITian. I’ve worked really hard for the last two years. I need to clear JEE Advanced to achieve my goal,” the 17-year-old said.

Sharayansh Agarwal and Parth Gupta, both 18-year-old, also dream of graduating from one of the premier Indian Institutes of Technology.

Parth said he is keeping his fingers crossed.

Sarthak Srivastava, an alumnus of City Montessori School’s Gomti Nagar branch, said he does not expect to get a core branch in IITs.

“My expected score ranges somewhere between 120 and 125 and as claimed by most of the coaching institutes the cut off this year will fluctuate between 85 and 95. I am likely to qualify but cannot expect an extraordinary result,” Sarthak said.

“In case I don’t get into IITs I will have state government engineering colleges as an option. I want to begin my own startup after completing B Tech,” he added.

Prakhar Srivastava of CMS Gomti Nagar said he prepared well for the exam and also scored well in the coaching tests.

“My expected score is around 130 and the likely cutoff is 90-95. This means that I would get none of the core branches in the top IITs and the lower branches in other IITs will be left for me. But I can get the desired branch in many of the other colleges like HBTU Kanpur or lower NITs,” Prakhar said.

He said he is busy playing football and cricket and also learning martial arts to entertain himself these days, but the worry about the results is always there. JEE Advanced was conducted online for the first time and candidates neither had a print of the question papers nor a record of their responses.
