GORAKHPUR/LUCKNOW: Kashif Jameel, 34, brother of suspended BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur pediatrician Dr Kafeel Khan, was on Tuesday referred to KGMU, Lucknow after his condition deteriorated post-surgery to remove bullets from his body. Kashif was shot at on the night of June 10 by unidentified miscreants. “Referred to Trauma Centre, KGMU, Lucknow for treatment,” reads Kashif’s discharge certificate.

Fire arm injuries on upper arm, neck and chin are mentioned in the certificate.

Kashif was accompanied by Kafeel and another brother Adeel Ahmed.

“Kashif is under observation. His condition is stable and out of danger right now,” said Dr Samir Mishra at KGMU.

In charge of Trauma Centre Prof Sandip Tiwari said: “We will conduct some tests on the basis of observation and then decide the further line of treatment.” Kafeel, meanwhile, slammed the police for putting the life of his brother in danger by “indulging in hours’ long medico-legal process and wasting crucial time when every second was precious for saving Kashif.” Kafeel is out on bail after serving eight months in jail in connection with the August 10 and 11, 2017 BRD Medical College tragedy in which over 30 children died allegedly due to oxygen shortage.

In a video posted on social media on Monday, Kafeel said: “Soon after he was shot at, Kashif himself called CO (Crime), SP (Crime) and SSP to inform them about the attack. Despite being injured Kashif hired an auto and reached a private hospital.”

“Police deliberately delayed the surgical procedure. We lost four golden hours due to police insensitivity,” said Kafeel in a social media message.

“My brother was crying with pain and blood was oozing out of his wounds but these stonehearted cops didn’t melt,” added Kafeel.

“Despite the immediate need to remove the bullets, the SP (Crime), accompanied by heavy police force, first took him (Kashif) from the private hospital where he was admitted to district hospital and then to BRD. BRD authorities returned Kashif, stating that medico-legal procedures had already been conducted at the district hospital. Kashif was then taken to the private hospital where he was operated upon,” Kafeel said.

The SSP refuted the charges levelled against police by Kafeel. “He was referred to BRD from the district hospital, where he was rushed for medico-legal procedures. However, his family chose a private hospital for treatment,” the SSP said.
