LUCKNOW: The University of Lucknow, in its executive council meeting on Wednesday, cracked the whip on Isabella Thoburn (IT) College, restricting it from running three post-graduate courses from the new academic session beginning from July.

The three courses are M Sc (biotechnology), M Sc (chemistry) and MA (economics).

The executive council also prevented IT College from running BA self-financed course, as the college did not have any approved teacher for it. Besides, the EC cut down the number of B Com self-finance seats as the college allegedly never sought the university’s approval, said an official.

LU vice-chancellor Prof SP Singh said, “IT College introduced three PG courses without seeking formal approval. We have struck down these courses. The college should not admit students for these courses for this academic session. But those in final year would be allowed to continue their course.”

The V-C said IT College was running B Com self-financed courses of four sections with one batch comprising of 80 students and they had just three teachers. Ideally, they should have had more than 10 teachers. The college was told to run just one section in UG self-finance category of a batch comprising 80 students only, failing which they college would face action.

Vineeta Prakash, principal, IT College, said she had not received the formal orders. “We are waiting for the formal decision. We will review their decision and take necessary steps.” The council gave its consent to the fee hike proposed by the varsity. LU effected 60% increase in fees for BA courses, 45% in B Sc and 8% in B Com while fees for self-financed courses was hiked by 15%. The EC also renamed three varsity hostels. The Management Girls’ Hostel will now be called as Sister Nivedita Hostel; the Management Boys’ Hostel was rechristened as Kautilya Hostel and a new girls’ hostel on the second campus will be called Lavanya Hostel.
