WORKERS, COPS CLASH AT NTPC POWER STATION, MANY HURT

LUCKNOW: NTPC thermal power station workers and policemen clashed in Tanda town in Ambedkar Nagar district on Wednesday, resulting in injuries to many.

The workers were demanding compensati­on for a colleague who died after suffering burn injuries at a boiler of the plant on Tuesday.

To control the agitated workers, the policemen canecharge­d, lobbed tear gas cells and fired in the air as well. Many vehicles were also damaged in the clash, police said.

A police officer said a labourer Sunil Chaurasia working near the boiler was injured on Tuesday and was rushed to Trauma Center Lucknow. He, however, succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.

On Wednesday, the workers put his dead body near the gate of the thermal power station demanding compensati­on and job to the family member of the deceased.

Later, the agitated employees blocked the movement of traffic on Tanda-Faizabad highway. When police force tried to disperse the protesting workers, they pelted police personnel with stones, forcing the cops to lob teargas cell and fire rubber bullets. Later, extra police force was called from the nearby police stations.

Superinten­dent of police (SP), Ambedkar Nagar, Santosh Kumar Mishra said the situation was now under control and a case had been registered and probe started into the incident. He further said security had been deployed as a precaution­ary measure.
