Shia Board chief supports uniform civil code

LUCKNOW: Chairman of the UP Shia Central Waqf Board Waseem Rizvi has supported enactment of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) with a common law for all communitie­s on issues related to marriage, divorce, succession and adoption.

In a proposal submitted to the National Law Commission chairman justice (retired) BS Chauhan on Wednesday, Rizvi cited the example of Goa, which has a common civil code since 1965. “If Goa can do it, why not other states also?” he asked, adding this was one of the aspiration­s of the Constituti­on as enshrined under the Directive Principles.
