LUCKNOW : Deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma’s tweet on June 14, wherein he announced the academic calendar for 2018-19, has again fuelled speculations that there will be no student union elections in any of the state universities and degree colleges across the state, for there is no mention of the student union polls in the tweet. However, when contacted, Sharma said that there was absolutely no discussion on the student union election dates as such.

LUCKNOW: Deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma’s tweet on June 14, wherein he announced the academic calendar for 2018-19, has again fuelled speculations that there will be no student union elections in any of the state universities and degree colleges across the state, for there is no mention of the student union polls in the tweet.

However, when contacted, Sharma said that there was absolutely no discussion on the student union election dates as such.

It was left to the vice chancellors to take a call as to when they wanted the polls to be held in their respective varsities. But whenever the elections were held, they would be conducted as per the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee as mandated by the SC.

The V-Cs would have to ensure that the academic atmosphere in their institutions was not disturbed on account of the student union polls. The last student union polls in Lucknow university were held in 2005.

In 2006, the university administration announced that LU Students Union (LUSU) polls would be conducted as per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations as mandated by the Supreme Court, with age restriction of the candidates and no expensive campaign. The student leaders opposed the order tooth and nail. They resorted to large scale vandalism and arson on campus, causing damage to the university property. The then vice chancellor RP Singh expelled at least 8-10 student leaders with criminal records and ordered sine die closure of the varsity.

On June 14, the deputy CM also tweeted there would be a uniform academic calendar for all the state universities in UP. Teachers would be called from July 5 and regular classes would begin from July 10. Convocation in all universities would be held on September or October from now on.

Annual examinations should be held between March 5 to April 30 and results would be announced by June 5.

The deputyCM has formed a committee of five V-Cs to make a uniform ordinance for PhD in all the universities of the state.
