LUCKNOW: Patients coming to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences will get better healthcare as new diagnostic facilities will be available here next month.

The department of radio therapy is getting three new machines installed at a cost of ₹14 crore. This will help treat cancer patients and also help reduce the waiting list of patients. A digital subscription angiography lab is also being set up here. “These facilities will be ready for patients soon,” said director Dr Dipak Malviya.

A positron-emission tomography (PET) scan is also planned here. This will help locate the problem area in the body and treatment will be easier and targeted. A PET scan is available only at PGI in the government sector. The labs will also facilitate treatment for patients in the neurology department. Problem such as blockage in the nerves will be diagnosed better. Instead of a big incision to treat such a problem, now it will be possible to treat it with a small incision.

A new oxygen chamber is also being developed where patients who have poor levels of oxygen in their body will be treated. This treatment is called hyperbaric oxygen therapy that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room .

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness. Other conditions treated with this therapy include serious infections, bubbles of air in blood vessels and wounds that don’t heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury. In a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, the air pressure is increased to three times the normal air pressure. Under these conditions, the lungs can inhale more oxygen than would be possible at normal air pressure.
