GORAKHPUR: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath hoisted 100-feet high tricolour at the gate of the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Gorakhpur University on Tuesday.

The flag, which has come up at cost of Rs 20 lakh is funded by the non-government organization (NGO), JC Midtown. It will be visible from every prominent corner of city owing to its high altitude. It will be illuminated at night with lights installed on the poles around it.

Vice chancellor prof Vijay Krishna , NGO chairman Vineet Poddar, Amar Tulsiyan, a businessman, and a large number of students and teachers were present on the occasion.

The CM, who is on two-day visit to his hometown Gorakhpur, reached the campus after chairing a review meeting on development work with officials at the circuit house .

The chief minister said Gorakhpur, which had been neglected for long , was now heading for a major transformation under the BJP government. The 100-feet high tricolour at the university gate was part of this change, he said.

“Education should be qualitative and linked with good conduct, culture and more importantly with nationalism,” he said.

He also expressed the hope that the tricolour will instill a sense of patriotism among the university students.

The chief minister sought people’s cooperation in making the state Uttam Pradesh. He also said the state could only become clean and be declared open defecation free when the common man contributed to sanitation .

In November last year, the university’s executive committee had given the nod to the proposal to install a 100-feet flag.

After the proposal was accepted, a 20 feet by 20 feet space was allotted near the gate for installing the flag.
