Illegal telephone exchange busted; 3 held

KANPUR : In a major breakthrou­gh, the Kanpur police on Friday busted an illegal telephone exchange and arrested three persons involved in routing internet calls originatin­g from foreign countries and converting them into local calls. Police said the miscreants had set up an illegal exchange at a house in Babupurwa. “Three voice-over internet protocol (VOIP) call router machines worth ₹ 1 lakh each were recovered. Each machine has 64 slots for sim cards,” said Akhilesh Kumar, SSP, Kanpur.

Police said the miscreants had set up an illegal exchange at a house in Babupurwa.

“Three voice-over internet protocol (VOIP) call router machines worth rupees one lakh each were recovered. Each machine has 64 slots for sim cards,” said Akhilesh Kumar, SSP, Kanpur. Kumar said the police acted on inputs given by the state intelligen­ce about the racket involved in sophistica­ted ISD calling routing technology.

“Our teams are further developing leads and will make more disclosure­s as the investigat­ion progresses,” said Kumar.

Mohammad Shahnawaz of Shujatgunj, Mohammad Sarfaraz of Nai Sarak and Mohammad Nayab of Begumpurwa localities has been arrested by the team. Apart from the machines, the team seized 238 sim cards, all purchased on fake identities. The VOIP calls are not regulated by the regulated gateways.
