MUMBAI: A 14-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping from the eighth floor of a housing society in Mumbai’s Kandivli (east) on Thursday evening and a video of the incident was widely shared on social media on Friday.

Harshika Maivanshi, a Class 9 student, lived in another building nearby, police said. She gained access to the refuge area of the high-rise, Orchid Society, and leaped off even as people urged her not to jump.

Samta Nagar police, who registered a case, said the incident took place around 4.30pm on Thursday.

Vinay Rathod, deputy commissioner of police, zone 12, said: “We don’t know why she took this extreme step. We have registered an accidental death report. We will investigate the case.”

Several people spotted her on the edge and called out to her, telling her not to jump.

After she jumped and injured herself, she was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

One of the onlookers who recorded the incident was Chetan Piwal, a tattoo artist who lives in the area.

“I wanted to save her life, but it all happened in two minutes,” said Piwal.

An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered at Samata Nagar police station.

The police are inquiring about the incident with the victim’s relatives and friends.

They said that they will examine her mobile phone and other gadgets, as well as go through her social media activities.
