LUCKNOW: The Lucknow police busted a fake ghee manufacturing unit from a slum in Bazarkhala area here on Tuesday morning.

The team seized around 760 kilograms of fake ghee and arrested one person while three others managed to escape.

Station house officer (SHO) of Bazarkhala police station Sujeet Kumar Dubey said the unit was being run by two brothers Mohd Saleem and Mohd Rashid with the help of Jabir and Farrukkh, all residents of Nai Basti behind Moti Jheel locality.

He said the unit was operational in a hut for past many years and was supplying fake ghee to different roadside eateries and restaurants.

Dubey said acting on a tip off the team raided the unit and arrested Mohd Saleem when he was busy loading the ghee containers on a four wheeler for distribution purpose.

The SHO said the accused revealed that they collected animal fat from different slaughter houses and prepared fake ghee by boiling it and adding chemicals. “The material prepared looks like ghee but is extremely harmful for human health. The accused were supplying this toxic material in open market risking human lives for their benefit,” Dubey said.

He said the team has recovered at least 50 containers filled with fake ghee while animal fat and other chemicals were also seized. He said the accused has revealed the names of his regular purchasers and further investigation was on.

“An FIR under IPC sections 420 for fraud and 272 for manufacturing and supplying adulterated foods products has been lodged,” Dubey added.
