LU’S TIMELINE OF TROUBLE

April 19, 2017: Six boys’ hostel inmates were suspended following repeated incidents of indiscipli­ne and violence. Thereafter, LU discontinu­ed the individual mess services at hostels, directing that a central mess facility would be made available.

June 7, 2017: A group of youths, mostly from LU, staged protest, stopped the CM’s fleet and waved black flag at chief minister Yogi Adityanath when he visited the campus for an event.

August 1, 2017: LU vice-chancellor and other officials were held hostage at the administra­tive block. They remained locked inside for 10 hours before the police could free them late in the night.

August 31, 2017: Four biometric machines installed at the LU central mess facility to keep a tab on indiscipli­ne, especially outsiders availing the facility, were destroyed by hostel inmates.

September 3, 2017: Hostellers broke into the central mess facility and took away the digital video recorder that contained CCTV footage of the area.

September 11, 2017: Hostellers allegedly stole the mess ration and took away six CCTV cameras installed at the central dining hall. They also pulled down the hostel MCB (miniature circuit breaker) and damaged the mess property. This led to the dining facility workers refusing to cater to students.

September 20, 2017: In the presence of bouncers, hostellers vandalised the dining hall property.
