LUCKNOW: In a departure from convention, from the new academic session senior professors in University of Lucknow will regularly teach first year undergraduate students. Vice chancellor Prof SP Singh has instructed that senior professors should not miss any class even if there are just a few students present .

Ahead of the new academic session that begins from July 10, the vice chancellor on Saturday appealed to all heads of departments to ensure senior professors take classes of first semester students as well. The university may send a circular requesting all senior professors to teach new entrants both at UG and PG level.

Deans would be entrusted with the responsibility to ensure senior professors took classes, Singh said. Customarily, senior professors in the university rarely teach first year undergraduate students. The bulk of the first year classes are taken by assistant professors or associate professors. In some cases, research fellows also take classes as senior professors do not turn up .

The decision was taken at a meeting of the vice chancellor with the deans, heads of the departments, university officials and LUTA president and general secretary, in the committee room of the administrative building.

The V-C appreciated the role of heads and teachers in administrative positions for devoting their summer vacation in preparation for the coming academic session. He also reminded the teachers that only they could take the university to new heights and also that it was their duty to do so.

The V-C said that the whole

schedule for the coming session was discussed much in advance. “For this reason, we have been able to achieve the targets in time,” he said, adding, “We must place the university first and ourselves after that. Needless to state, students’ interest should be the top priority of the university.” Prof SP Singh pointed out that it was a matter of great pride that in many areas, the plans and programmes of the LU were taken up as programmes of all the state universities.

The vice chancellor asked the

deans and heads that the timetable should be uploaded on the university website. He said, “Students face huge psychological and physical changes when they come to a higher education institution from their intermediate colleges . Their perception gets changed. We must treat them in a way that they feel comfortable and at ease in the university.”

The V-C directed that all the classrooms must get cleaned before the beginning of the session, informed Prof NK Pandey, LU spokesperson.
