NEWDELHI: A 19-year-old man died after a car hit him at Feroz Shah Road on Wednesday night and dragged him for few metres, before he was pulled out and rushed to a hospital.

A video of the accident, showing the man stuck below the car, went viral on social media. The police clarified that the man was taken to hospital within 10 minutes and that he succumbed to his injuries later during treatment. Police have arrested the accused driver.

The deceased has been identified as Akash Singh, who worked in a canteen at ITO. According to the police, the accident took place around 9.10 pm when Singh was trying to cross a road to reach Feroz Shah Road where one of his relatives stays in a servant quarter. Deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi), Madhur Verma said, as told by locals and passersby, the car driver tried to escape from the spot and dragged the victim for about 100 metres.

“Seeing this, locals raised alarm. A team of policemen at a nearby picket swung into action and caught the errant driver. The victim was pulled out and he was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in the accused’s car, wasting no time. He later died during the treatment,” he said.

Verma said that the accused driver was identified as 40-yearold Bhawani Singh, a resident of Karawal Nagar. He was booked for causing death due to negligence and for rash driving and a case was registered at Parliament Street police station.

A video of the accident also went viral on social media, wherein locals alleged laxity on police’s part in rushing the man to hospital. However, reacting to this, Verma said that the accident call was made at 9.20 pm and the man was rushed to hospital without any delay.
