2 held for Sambhal rape, murder

LUCKNOW : Two of the five men, accused of gang-raping a 35-yearold woman at her house in Sambhal and then setting her afire in the ‘yajnashala’ of a local temple, were arrested on Monday, police said. The arrest came a day after the ADG visited the spot and directed the Sambhal police to work out the case within two days. Police said two of the accused were known to the woman.

LUCKNOW: Two of the five men, accused of gang-raping a 35-year-old woman at her house in Sambhal and then setting her afire in the ‘yajnashala’ of a local temple, were arrested on Monday, police said.

Additional director general (ADG) of police, Bareilly zone, Prem Parakash said, “We have arrested two accused, Aram Singh and Gullu aka Jaiveer, from Sambhal. The accused are being interrogat­ed by the investigat­ion unit.”

The arrest came a day after the ADG visited the spot and directed the Sambhal police to work out the case within two days.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s husband, she was gang-raped by five men before being killed during the wee hours of Saturday.

Based on the complaint, police lodged an FIR under sections 376 D (gang rape) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to police, two of the accused were known to the woman.

Four teams have been formed to arrest the accused which are being assisted by local intelligen­ce and surveillan­ce

units.

The ADG said the woman’s post-mortem examinatio­n confirmed that she had been gang raped and burnt alive.

“We are monitoring every

aspect of the case and raids are on to arrest the accused. We are tracking the location of the remaining three accused. They will be arrested soon,” he said.
