Rape case after ‘halala’ complaint

-

LUCKNOW:The Bareilly police have registered a complaint of a Muslim woman who was allegedly forced to enter into ‘halala’ with her father-in-law.

“FIR has been registered against the father-in-law of the woman and other in-laws,” said Muniraj, senior superintendent of police, Bareilly. In the FIR, he has been charged with rape (Section 376). The woman’s husband and five of her in-laws have also been named in the FIR. The husband has been accused of unnatural intercourse (Section 377) while others have been accused of criminal conspiracy (Section 120 B). The case was registered at Kila police station on Tuesday.

The victim woman was reportedly married in 2009, but was given triple talaq by her husband in 2011. Later, the man agreed to remarry her on the condition that she enters into ‘halala’ with his father. ‘Halala’ refers to a practice wherein a divorced woman has to consummate the marriage with another man and then get a divorce from him before remarrying her previous husband.

with my father-in-law,” said the woman. The man remarried the woman after the ‘halala’ in 2011 only to divorce her again in 2017. “A few months after the divorce, he agreed to marry me again and was forcing me to enter into halala with my brother-inlaw to which I refused,” said the woman. According to the relatives of the woman, she approached local clerics for assistance but her plea was not heeded. She lodged a complaint with Kila police earlier this month. “I have advised the Kila police to ensure timely investigation into the matter,” said the SSP.
