NEW DELHI: As the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) locked horns in the debate on the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government on Friday, other opposition parties used the opportunity to highlight their own pet issues and to target the ruling dispensation.

Trinamool Congress, the fourth-largest party in the Lok Sabha, took a swipe at the PM for his recent speech at a BJP rally in West Bengal.

“The PM has become a travelling salesman...We want to know if the PM will work or roam around to make speeches,” said TMC leader Saugata Ray.

While Ray said that his party wants a India free of fear, All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen leader Asauddin Owaisi asked if the BJP wants “a Muslim-Dalit mukt India,” referring to mob attacks in recent months on Muslims and Dalits.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Mohammed Salim accused the government of ruining the economy and quoted two popular Hindi movie songs. “We earlier asked ‘kya hua tera wada’? (what happened to your

promise). “But now, with only one year is left for the elections, we have to say, ‘jo wada kiya woh nibhana padega’ (you have to keep the promise you made).”

Aam Aadmi Party leader Bhagwant Mann recited a poem that sought to know when ‘acche din’ (good times) would arrive, a reference to the BJP slogan in the 2014 general elections.

National Conference leader and Srinagar MP Farooq Abdullah quoted late poet Allama Iqbal and referred to an incident during an India-Pakistan war to say, “Don’t distrust Muslims. Without them, the country can’t be built.”

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Jay Prakash Narayan Yadav slammed the BJP over party leader (and former chief) Lalu Prasad being sent to jail (after being convicted for corruption), but warned that it will not deter our leaders from fighting against the BJP.
