LUCKNOW: It is the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 28-29 which has jolted the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) out of its slumber, making it aware of broken roads, fallen poles and fused street lights in the city.

The PM will be here for a ‘ground breaking ceremony’ in which he will launch projects worth over ₹50,000 crore . MoUs for these projects were signed during the investors’ summit in February. The corporation would never have been serious about civic problems had the PM’s visit not been scheduled, said corporator Girish Mishra.

The municipal commissioner has written letters to Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), Lucknow Electricity Supply Authority (LESA), public works department (PWD) and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to construct roads, repair dividers and change fused street lights.

In a letter to chief engineer, PWD, municipal commissioner Indramani Tripathi has pointed out the need of repair in broken dividers on VVIP guest house road, broken red stones at Kanshiram Dwar, broken foot path in front of Capital cinema theatre, broken railing from Hazratganj to Raj Bhawan, broken divider on Vikramaditya Marg, damaged islands at Samtamoolak Chowk and shabby divider at two points from Fun Mall to Lohia Park.

Similarly, in a letter to NHAI project manager, the municipal commissioner has drawn his

attention to broken railings in front of CMS Gomti Nagar extension, railings of Gomti Nagar underpass divider, Rama Bai ground, broken railing on divider of Anasal Housing on Rae Bareli Road, gaping hole in front of DPS service lane and broken dividers in front of Crystal Apartments, Amar Shaheed Path Kanpur road junction and Faizabad Road cut.

The railings in front of high court gate number 3 and 4 are broken and are without paint and there is a patch in front of the HC gates, the letter says.

Ironically, finally the LMC has also seen the fallen pole in Shantipuram to which residents had been drawing its attention for days. The LMC chief has shot off a letter to GM LESA to remove the pole before the PM’s visit.

Leader of the opposition in LMC house Sayyed Yawar Hussain Reshu said, “I wonder why the LMC chief sees these problems just before the visit of PM or any VIP. Why does he not see these problems in usual days? The city is filthy and in other parts too dividers are broken, railings damaged and roads tattered. Why doesn’t the civic body see these spots?”
