LUCKNOW: In a joint operation, the UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and a West Bengal police team arrested two allegedly active members of the Bangaladesh based terror outfit Jamat-ul-Mujahideen (JMB) from Greater Noida on Tuesday.
Confirming the arrest, inspector general, UP ATS, Asim Arun said, “The JMB members have been identified as one Rubel Ahmed aka Muneer ul Islam and Musharaf Husain aka Tejerul Islam. Both of the accused are resident of Thakurgaon district of Bangladesh.”
Thakurgaon district is located on the India-Bangaladesh border.
The arrests were made during a raid on house in the Surajpur police station area of Greater Noida where the suspects were staying. The raid was carried out on specific inputs given by the West Bengal police. The team recovered fake Aadhar cards and other documents from the suspects.
“The accused reportedly infiltrated into India to avoid arrest by Bangladesh Police in March 2018. They moved to Greater Noida where they continued with their work,” said the IG.
“We are interrogating both of them to get more information about their activities,” he added.
The West Bengal police will try to secure a transit remand to shift the accused to West Bengal. A team of UP ATS is also likely to visit West Bengal to get more information about the duo’s activisities.
The JMB, founded in 1998 by Shaikh Abdur Rahman, was banned in 2005 for setting off about 500 bombs simultaneously all around Bangladesh.
The JMB has been critised for for promoting radical Islam in Bangaldesh, where several secular, free thinking people have been murdered.
Three Bangladeshi youths, suspected to have links with Islamic extremist group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), were arrested in Lucknow in September last year by the UP ATS.
The ABT is an al-Qaeda inspired Islamic extremist group in Bangladesh.
