Only trouble-makers were denied admission: LU V-C
LUCKNOW: Vice-chancellor of the Lucknow University (LU) Prof SP Singh, on Tuesday, said that he had denied admission only to those who were involved in theft at jewellery shops, caught stealing hostel fans or fled away with sweets without payment.
Addressing the students on campus, Singh said, “We want to provide a peaceful academic environment on the campus. Hence, few decisions were taken and one of them was to deny admission to those who are trouble makers and may disrupt academic atmosphere.”
Held at LU’s Malviya Hall, the open house session was aimed to take feedback from students for improving facilities on campus.
“I was expecting more participation from the first year students. However, it was mostly attended by second and third year students of UG and PG,” Singh said.
When Shiva Rajwar, a BA second year student, raised the issue of non allotment of hostel and registered complaint of mess facility, the V-C said, “There has been instance wherein inmates fled with bag full of potatoes and onions causing huge loss to the mess owner. Students also vandalised the newly constructed central mess. We appealed to inmates to help identifying the baddies, but they did not cooperate.”
Some of the common problems of the students listed out to the vice chancellor were-- nonallotment of hostel, no ceiling fan in the classroom and water seeping from the rooftop. Singh said he had asked the chief provost to address the problem of inmates and allot them hostels where possible.
On issue of water seeping inside geography classroom, the V-C said the construction was on above the classroom due to which the water was seeping inside. The V-C said water coolers would be installed in every block and not in every department as demanded by some of the students.
The venue was turned into fortress as heavy police force was deployed at the venue. Reason: On July 4, a number of expelled students beat up the university teachers as varsity denied them admission for showing black flag to chief minister Yogi Adityanath last year during his visit to the campus.
On the other hand, the explanations given by the vice-chancellor cut no ice with the members of the Lucknow University Chhatra Sangharsh Morcha. They said that if the university denied admissions to these students, they would run a “parallel university” on the streets of Lucknow from July 25.
