Fatwa against Nida Khan: Police complaints likely against Rizvi, Noori

-

LUCKNOW: Instant triple talaq victim Nida Khan is seeking legal counsel to lodge a police complaint against the Barelvi cleric who issued a fatwa against her -ousting her from Islam for questioning practices like instant triple talaq and nikah halala.

“The fatwa was an attempt to malign me and instigate people against me. I am seeking counsel to lodge a formal complaint against such clerics,” said Nida.

To recall, the imam of Jama Masjid, Bareilly, Khurshid Alam Rizvi, had issued the said fatwa earlier this month.

Nida was married into the AlaHazrat family and was allegedly given instant triple talaq by her husband. She said she is pursuing the matter of triple talaq and harassment by her in-laws.

The fatwa was termed “undemocratic” across the Muslim community, including by the UP minority commission.

The commission also sent a two-member fact-finding team to investigate the matter. The team recorded Nida’s statement as well as her in-laws’. A detailed report was submitted to the commission. Nida said she was also planning to lodge a police complaint against Moin Siddique Noori, head of a Bareilly NGO, who had announced a reward for anyone who would stone Nida and shave off her head. Noori had made the same announcement for another triple talaq victim, Farhat Naqvi, sister of union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

The local police have extended their support to the duo against the incendiary announcement, advising them to lodge formal complaints. Farhat said, “I will lodge a police complaint against Noori on Wednesday. I have complete faith in the police and judiciary and hope that they will take strict against such people.”
