LUCKNOW: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to the martyrs of the Kargil war and remembered their sacrifices in the line of duty.

During a programme to mark Kargil Vijay Diwas at Kargil Smriti Vatika on Thursday, he honoured family members of Captain Manoj Pandey, Rifleman Sunil Jung, Kevalnand, Major Ritesh Sharma, Navneet Rai, Rajendra Yadav, Raja Singh and Roshan Singh. The families of freedom fighters Ashfaqullah Khan and Sachindranath Bakshi were also present on the occasion.

The CM directed municipal corporations in UP to develop parks in memory of martyrs where such programmes could be held.

Urban development minister Suresh Khanna said he would ensure that such parks come up in all municipal corporations. He called on residents to plant at least two saplings this year and maintain them for better environment.

“Everyone knows the situation was not easy for India. The Pakistani forces were occupying strategic positions, but the Indian forces recaptured the area. Initially, Pakistan tried to pressurise India by nuclear blackmail…their prime minister approached the US to pressurise India not to use force, but the then Indian Prime Minister AB Vajpayee told the US that India will regain all its territory and then the war would end. After that, America refused to intervene,” said the chief minister. Yogi Adityanath emphasised, “Today is Sankalp Diwas (the day to take a pledge) to keep our country safe, to make India a great country and to work for prosperity, safety & progress. By remembering the sacrifices made by our jawans, we would be able to work hard and give a great future to our kids. However it’s seen that some of us take a pledge but don’t act on that. It’s time to act for the country.”

He said, “India is emerging as the third largest economy and it’s our duty to contribute to this journey. We can do so in our own small ways by maintaining cleanliness for our country’s progress. Neat and clean India (Swachha Bharat) could be the base for a strong and prosperous India.”

The CM said his government had doubled the amount for the families of soldiers martyred in the line of duty.
