Panel set up to probe alleged rape in SSL hosp toilet

VARANASI: The Sir Sundar Lal Hospital of Banaras Hindu University has constitute­d a fact-finding committee and a medical board in connection with the alleged rape of a woman in the hospital toilet on Friday night. The alleged incident took place when the woman, in her twenties, visited the hospital for treatment.

The hospital’s medical superinten­dent prof Vijaynath Mishra said, “A committee has been constitute­d to find facts in the incidents occurred on Friday night. Chaired by prof M Ansari, the committee comprises prof UC Patni and Dr Anjali Rani as members and assistant registrar MK Gupta as secretary.

“A medical board has also been constitute­d. Medical officer Dr SK Gautam is its secretary. Both the committees will submit their report to vice-chancellor prof Rakesh Bhatnagar,” Mishra added. The incident occurred around 12.30am. Police said the woman, resident of a village in Kerakat area of Jaunpur, claimed she was afflicted with fever three months ago and had been under treatment by SSL Hospital doctors since then. She, along with her mother, visited the hospital again on July 27.

Police said the woman and her mother stayed back on the hospital premises. Around 12.30am, the girl went to the toilet near the OPD but failed to return. Her mother reached the toilet in search of her and saw a youth raping the woman there, police said.

She raised an alarm, and attendants and others beat up the youth and handed him over to the police. Inspector, Lanka police station, Sanjiv Mishra said a case was registered against Santosh. and he was arrested.
