LUCKNOW: The King George’s Medical University has sought an explanation from the private firm conducting lab tests for patients on the campus, after some reports were found incorrect.

“The card test reports were incorrect. Though the doctors conducted superior tests for confirmation and no patient suffered any harm, we have sought an explanation from the firm as to why and how the tests went wrong,” said Prof SN Sankhwar, chief medical superintendent of the KGMU.

Reports of incorrect lab reports came from different hospitals in the past two weeks after which cross-examination of samples was increased to protect patients.

The associated risk with an incorrect lab report is of spreading of virus that the particular patient may be carrying.

For infected patients, precautions are taken to check spread of infection. The incorrect test report was of a 50-year-old patient who was referred to KGMU from Sultanpur.

The doctors got tests done before dialysis and the reports said he was negative for HIV and Hepatitis. His dialysis was done.

When the patient reached for the next session, the doctors saw his file with an old report, stating he was HIV positive.

Alarmed with the report, the doctors got the equipment disinfected and also shifted the patient to equipment designated for such patients.
