GORAKHPUR: Some unidentified people stole photocopies of doctors’ degrees from Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College office in Gorakhpur and sold them to others who used these papers to run two fake pathology labs, people familiar with the matter said.

The fake pathology labs were being run for years, illegally using the names and registration numbers of two women doctors posted as lecturers in the medical college’s department of pathology, they added.

The police lodged an FIR on the basis of a complaint by the BRD Medical College authorities, SSP Shalabh Mathur said.

An MBBS student, said to be the mastermind behind the scam, charged ₹40,000 for each such document. Both the MBBS student and a hospital clerk, also allegedly involved in the scam, went underground following media reports on the issue and subsequent registration of the FIR, they said. “The SP north is investigating the matter,” he added.

After registration of the case, the pathology owners were on the run, station house officer, Gulharia, Jaideep said.

The matter concerning the theft of documents came to light

on Thursday when a patient reached the BRD Medical College pathology lab with her earlier medical reports issued from a private lab running in the Gorakhnath area of the city.

The Medical College doctors were shocked to find the private lab report carrying the name, ‘fake signatures’ and registration number of a woman doctor posted

as lecturer at the medical college.

They brought the matter to the notice of the lecturer who said she did not know how her name and registration number were used to operate the lab. She, in turn, alerted medical college principal Ganesh Kumar.

The principal said: “The police are probing the incident and will take action against the guilty.”
