‘Arthroscopy crucial for diagnosing sports injury’
LUCKNOW: Arthroscopy is emerging as a diagnostic solution for sportspersons who fail to get cure with the help of other methods such as MRI, said experts at the arthroscopy conclave-2018 organised by department of orthopaedic surgery of the King George’s Medical University (KGMU).
“MRI, despite being one of the best options for diagnosis, gives a static picture of the injury which at times might not be sufficient to calculate the exact extent of damage to ligament. This calculation has great value as far as sports injury or injury to a sportsperson is concerned and here the role of arthroscopy comes in handy as diagnostic and repair tool,” said Prof Ashish Kumar, head of the sports injury department at the KGMU.
Convener of the arthroscopy conclave Prof Kumar said that ligament reconstruction, cartilage repair, recurrent dislocation of shoulder repair and rotator cup tear repair are some of the crucial treatments that arthroscopy does for sportspersons.
“Treatment in about 15% cases of sportspersons is delayed as they first go for treatment with X-ray and MRI. With no relief, the arthroscopic diagnosis then comes as a great help,” he said adding: “Hence arthroscopy is not just apt for treatment but also for making correct diagnosis for sports injuries.”
More than 200 delegates from across the country are participating in the arthroscopy conclave where hands-on training and cadaveric operations is being performed by experts to disseminate the knowledge to participants.
The doctors said that the Arthroscopy Society Uttar Pradesh has been conducting several sessions for orthopaedic surgeons and will be conducting more as this method of treatment helps in speedy recovery and reduces hospital stay.
