DEORIA: The Deoria police and administration on Wednesday claimed that only seven girls were still considered missing from the Maa Vindhyavasini shelter home.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Deoria Rohan P Kanay on Wednesday said initial reports suggested 18 inmates were missing but police and district administration located 11 of them in the last three days after doing a physical verification of those reunited with their families.

He added the physical verification of seven other women, said to be married and reunited with their families, was yet to be done.

The earlier figure of 18 missing inmates was based on the list that Girija Tripathi and her husband Mohan Tripathi, who operated the shelter home, provided to the district probation office, the SP said. The couple provided a list of 43 inmates, including children, girls and some elderly people, to the district probation officer on July 4, 2018 but it was not an updated list, he said.

“We recovered 23 inmates, including girls and children, from the shelter home during a joint raid by the police and district probation office on August 5 night,” he said. While 18 of them were those mentioned on the list provided by the Tripathi couple,

five others not mentioned on the list were also rescued from the shelter home, he explained.

“There were two others, the girl who escaped from the shelter home and one who was recovered from Gorakhpur,” he said.

He said the confusion about the number of missing inmates arose as the list was not properly updated.

District magistrate Amit Kishore said the rescued girls will be sent to shelter homes in Varanasi and Allahabad after their statements are recorded before a judicial magistrate.

The statements of nine rescued girls were recorded before the additional chief judicial magistrate (8) on Wednesday. The statement of the other girls will recorded on Thursday.

He added the administration will soon apply for grants to construct a new shelter home for girls found abandoned and recovered in different cases.
