LUCKNOW: A fine of RS: 200 was slapped on the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) for ignoring mosquito larvae on the campus that was spotted by health officials during an inspection on Friday.

In a bid to prevent mosquitoborne diseases, the health department is running a campaign to check offices, homes and other establishments. If the conditions are found favourable for mosquito breeding – such as stagnant water in the balcony, unused pots etc, a notice if served to the owner or head of the office.

A month ago, the KGMU had got a notice when health officials found conditions favourable for mosquito breeding on the campus. Fine is imposed if larvae is found on the second visit. This was done when the team members found larvae near the Trauma Centre.

“The team found water from the air conditioner duct and even water tanks accumulating on the terrace of the Trauma Centre. There was water in the waste thermacol left on the rooftop,” said Dr Sunit Saxena, spokesperson for the office of the chief medical officer of Lucknow.

“Mosquito larvae were found on the KGMU campus during the previous visit also that is why fine was slapped,” said chief medical officer Dr Narendra Agrawal.

Spread over 126 acres land, the KGMU has over 2,000 staff members and over 500 on contractual basis. Each building has dedicated cleaning staff and security staff who manage things as per the requirement. Besides, each wing has a supervisor who oversees the work done by the other staff.

With monsoon at its peak, presence of mosquito larvae could be dangerous as vectorborne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya are troubling people in the state.
